What is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and how can it help?

People often get confused by the terms therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, psychological therapy. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a highly effective approach to change that's solution focused, practical and geared towards achieving specific goals chosen by you. These are very individual and wide ranging, specific to your particular life circumstances and challenges you may feel are holding you back.

Whatever your difficulties, we can offer an individual assessment to help identify key challenges and outcomes you hope to achieve at the first instance, followed by a uniquely tailored treatment programme to support your personal growth journey, or otherwise refer you to a relevant specialist practitioner or organisation.

Speak in Confidence

Therapy takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.

A problem shared...

Trouble with a relationship; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression - many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Therapy gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.

Make better, healthier new choices

Working together we can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.

What issues can cognitive behavioural therapy help with?

People come to us for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through therapy:

Feelings of stress

Anxiety

Panic attacks

Relationship problems

Grief, loss or bereavement

Problems with addiction

Trauma and post-traumatic stress

Abuse

Depression

Problems with confidence or self-esteem

Anger management

Issues relating to sexuality

Difficulties at work or in retirement

Problems with family or school life

Our Approach

Our process is collaborative, solution focused and led by the priorities you identify. We start with some exploratory work to better understand the origins of present day difficulties and how they developed, as well as what’s keeping them going right now. For some people, a detailed assessment and formulation may be enough to give you the boost that you need to start making changes. However, many people find it helpful to have an experienced clinician guide them through a reflective learning process whereby you can start taking concrete steps towards achieving your goals.

Sessions are usually weekly, or they can be twice weekly. We like to offer flexibility since no two people or their dilemmas are the same. Sometimes longer sessions can be beneficial for specific types of issues, or may just suit your personality type or communication style better. This can be discussed and agreed subject to availability of your therapist. To book an initial consultation online, please get in touch. Outdoor walking sessions are also available on Hampstead Heath.
